Sun Java Virtual Machine

To determine if your machine has the Sun Java Virtual Machine (JVM):

  1. Launch your browser.
  2. From the Help menu, select About Plug-ins.
  3. Look for the Java plug-in icon. If you do not have the plug-in, then you need to install it.

Installing or Upgrading Java on Linux

To install applications on a Linux machine, you need to log in to your machine as root. Note that the SSL vpn@ucsf works with Netscape 7 and Mozilla 0.9.9. To install the Sun JVM, from the Sun site (http://java.sun.com/j2se/) download either the:

    1. Linux RPM for RedHat or
    2. GNUZIP/Tar (for other Linux platforms) for the JRE file

Note: Make sure that you download the GNUZIP/Tar script to the directory where you want to install the Java Plug-in, such as: /usr/local.

Run the downloaded executable or extract the archive per the instructions provided by Sun Microsystems.

Create a symbolic link from the browser’s plug-in directory to the installed Java library libjavaplugin_oji.so per the included readme.txt document.
