Access to UCSF Campus DNS Servers to be Restricted

WHAT'S HAPPENING:

For important security reasons and on behalf of UCSF Campus, OAAIS will be reconfiguring the DNS servers so that off-campus users will be denied access, beginning October 30, 2008.

Before October 30, please check to see if you are on the Campus network by visiting http://help.ucsf.edu/custom/ip_test.jsp

WHEN

Implementation begins October 30, 2008.

WHO IS AFFECTED:

Users of off-campus Internet Service Provider (ISP) services who also configure their computers to use the UCSF campus DNS servers. This does not include users of the campus VPN service.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE AN AFFECTED USER:

Please visit WhatToDo for instructions.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

A detail background document is available here. To summarize, there are two serious security risks that occur with caching DNS servers, allowing anyone on the Internet to query them. To minimize these risks, and to follow standard Internet best practices, UCSF campus is joining a number of other universities and ISPs in restricting access to their respective campus DNS servers.

For questions or concerns regarding these security measures, please contact Customer Support at 514-4100, option 2.
