General Non-Technical FAQ

What is VPN?

Virtual Private Network (VPN) software enables you to access UCSF-restricted data when you use an off-campus Internet connection such as dialup, DSL, or cable modem.

Why do I need VPN?

Some of UCSF electronic resources are restricted only to those affiliated with the University. If you access these resources from a computer on campus, the systems can detect that you're connecting from within the campus network, and then grant you access. However, if you attempt to connect from home (or any other non-campus location), there's no automatic way for the systems to know that you're affiliated with the University. To provide that authentication, you must install VPN software on your computer(s) and use it when you need to access UCSF-restricted computer resources from off-campus locations.

In addition, increasingly stringent legislation requires UCSF to ensure the privacy of personal, clinical, academic, administrative, and research information. VPN ensures the confidentiality and integrity of information as it travels over the public internet because VPN requires:

What types of Internet connections work with VPN?

VPN works with any type of network that gives you access to the Internet. Examples include:


Will VPN work with all ISPs (Internet Service Providers)?

Most ISPs allow access to VPN services, but there are always exceptions. Some businesses block VPN usage because of internal policy. Some network devices (especially older Linksys and Netgear routers) do not allow critical information to pass through them so the VPN will not connect.

Can I use VPN from a home network?

If your home network is connected to the Internet and you can access other Internet sites (such as Google) then you can use your VPN to access UCSF.

What UCSF network resources are available via VPN?

All VPN users have access to general UCSF network resources such as the library.

Some faculty and staff VPN users (but NOT students) may need access to departmental LAN resources (such as shared departmental files and programs). Faculty and staff who need access to departmental resources should contact their departmental CSC for the specific detailed information.

Can I use VPN to access the UCSF network and/or departmental resources if my computer is located on another organization’s network that is behind a firewall?

Can outside support vendors apply for a VPN account?

Yes. However, vendors must apply for a VPN account through a UCSF department sponsor and obtain appropriate authorization.

I am a contractor working for UCSF - can I get a VPN account?

Yes. If there is a business need for a contractor to have a VPN account, a designated UCSF department sponsor must submit the request, receive the logon information, and give that information to the contractor. The UCSF department sponsor is responsible for the account, including its termination.

I am a vendor who supports several different departments. Do I need more than one VPN account?

No, you only need one VPN account, but the departments you support will need to decide which one will be the responsible contact.

Can I use the VPN on more than one computer?

While it is OK to use the VPN system from more than one computer, you are only allowed to have one connection at a time.

My friend / roommate / family member / person I know needs to access the UCSF computing network, can I let them use my VPN account?

No, this is a violation of UCSF policy that is punishable by removal of your VPN account.

I'm having a problem with the VPN. How can I get help?

First, please check the technical FAQ for  the Web (SSL) VPN to make sure your problem hasn't already been answered.
