New Data Center

Move Completion: March 2009

Successfully concluding several years of planning and construction, the Office of Academic and Administrative Information Systems (OAAIS) moved into a new data center near Mission Bay over the Cesar Chavez holiday weekend. UCSF’s investment in this data center is part of the University’s strategic plan to leverage information technology in service of our mission, and to provide the highest levels of protection for our information resources.

The former data center, located on Parnassus, had become severely cramped after two decades of occupancy, forcing OAAIS to limit its services due to space, power and cooling constraints. The new location is on seismically stable ground and the building houses new network infrastructure, backup power systems, plenty of cooling capacity and room to offer computer hosting services to campus departments. The new data center will deliver levels of service and reliability needed to support critical campus IT services as well as new and innovative applications.

Even before the March data center relocation, the new facility was in use by the Exchange email team as they began to upgrade the current end-of-life equipment to Exchange 2007, which will offer a more reliable and stable architecture. Additionally, OAAIS will be providing 1 GB mailboxes to all Campus Exchange users by the end of summer 2009.

The move, itself, was a seamless effort by the entire OAAIS organization, concluding ahead of schedule and with little disruption of service to the Campus community.
