Integrated Data Repository

January 2009

In 2006, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) was established at UCSF to aid researches in their work. From this, the Academic Research Systems (ARS) group was formed as part of the Office of Academic and Administrative Information Systems (OAAIS) to provide the information technology and services support for CTSI and related UCSF research efforts.

The long term project that the ARS group is challenged with developing is an Integrated Data Repository (IDR) of clinical and life sciences data.

The Integrated Data Repository will be a large-scale data warehouse with data from multiple clinical systems including UCare, STOR, PICIS, Radiology, Pathology, Pharmacy, Clinical Labs, as well as disease registries and public databases. The IDR will also include billing data, life sciences data such as genomics, proteomics, and will support translational research.

The IDR is a multi year project supporting cohort scanning, hypothesis testing, correlative studies, and retrospective analysis of well-defined populations. In the first phase of the project, the IDR will hold public data sets, including NHANES, the California Death Registry, and a California demographics data set. More public data sets are planned, including OSHPD.

The Committee on Human Research (CHR) has approved a protocol for the Integrated Data Repository.

ARS is also working with several groups including Radiology, the School of Dentistry, and the Quality Safety Network who are interested in housing their data in the IDR.

In the future, ARS will partner with other institutions including San Francisco General Hospital, Kaiser, and the San Francisco Veterans Administration Medical Center, among others.
