iPhone 3.1 Software Update and UCSF Exchange, September 9, 2009
UPDATE: Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 3:30 p.m.:
In order to address the ActiveSync disabling for 2G and 3G iPhones,
caused by the release of the iPhone 3.1 OS, OAAIS will temporarily rollback the
server setting enforcing device encryption. The purpose of this move is to allow
mail@UCSF customers who upgraded their older devices to continue working until
the long-term solution is put into effect.
Within the near future, encryption on the device will be enforced. Without Apple revising the iPhone OS to enable software encryption, older iPhones will become incompatible with the UCSF Campus Exchange system. OAAIS information security administrators are currently working with the School of Medicine Information Services Unit on a plan for implementing the standard. OAAIS will provide sufficient notice of the implementation date to allow customers who wish to continue using iPhones to upgrade to newer devices that support enforced encryption.

UPDATE: Friday, September 11, 2009, 12:00 p.m. (noon):
Apple has confirmed that the recent iPhone 3.1 OS update includes changes that significantly impact UCSF customers with 2G and 3G iPhones connecting to the OAAIS email system. The issue involves the new OS recognizing and enforcing the system encryption setting on the device; the full article can be found at http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2941.
We are reviewing possible options for addressing the connectivity problem created by this software update, and will post more detailed information as soon as it's available.

To Campus iPhone Customers;
We have received reports of the ActiveSync connection to Campus Exchange accounts being disabled after installing the new 3.1 OS update from Apple on 2G and 3G model iPhones.
At this time we recommend that customers with older iPhones hold off on updating their devices with the new software. The system encryption requirements have been in place for the last year and are not new. We have contacted our campus Apple representatives to get additional information on this update.
We will follow-up with more details when they become available.
