Presentation: UC Information Technology Guidance Committee

Steve Barclay welcomed UC Office of the President guests Kris Hafner and Dan Greenstein for a discussion of the system-wide Information Technology Guidance Committee’s report, available on the UC IT Guidance Committee website (http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/itgc/welcome.html).

Kris informed those present the purpose of their visit was to review the priorities and issues related to IT that developed since their last round of campus visits eighteen months prior.  Kris and Dan reviewed findings and recommendations with the group, elaborating on key points and taking questions about specific details. Most notable were issues surrounding funding of infrastructure initiatives, which Gene Washington explained is a top priority at UCSF. Steve agreed, suggesting Kris and Dan consider moving their second line item to the top since IT costs should be added to any budget discussion about building construction. NGMAN and other UCSF initiatives were briefly discussed.

The group also discussed UC’s system-wide commitment to “go green” and reduce the University’s carbon footprint. Steve informed guests UCSF has hired full-time staff for this purpose.

Finally, a collaborative work environment was stressed, not just at the system-wide level, but with agencies such as the NIH. Kris agreed, and indicated UCSF has been a leader in this type of collaboration with the recent implementation of a new effort reporting system.
